How can I make a field take up an entire side?

You can create a field that takes up an entire card side by enabling the "Full mode" option in the Deck Setup screen, but the following conditions apply:

  • Full mode is only available for text fields.
  • The full mode text field must be the only field on the side in order for it to occupy the entire side.

Note that when full mode is enabled, you may also center the text within the side, which may be useful for flash cards.

How can I use Dextrous for flash cards?

There is no correct way to make flash card decks in Dextrous, but for many types of flash cards, a deck with two sides is sufficient. Consider using full mode on the sides so each side consists of a single large text area. There are two main approaches to quizzing yourself with cards in Dextrous. You can randomize cards in the desktop screen by clicking the "shuffle and stack" icon at the top of the window. You can then draw cards from the top of the shuffled deck using the mouse.

Alternatively, you can jump to a random card in the card view by pressing Ctrl+Space. This key combination causes Dextrous to focus on a random card in the current deck. If the card has multiple sides and you press Ctrl+Space again, Dextrous cycles through all of the sides before displaying a new random card.

Can I supply my own desktop background?

Yes! The available desktop backgrounds are located in %installfolder%\DesktopBackgrounds (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Dextrous\DesktopBackgrounds). You can place additional image files in that folder. The images must have .jpg or .png extensions. For images to work well as desktop backgrounds, they should generally be square and have a "seamless" quality (i.e. the image should look nice when it is tiled with itself). The image should probably be between 256 and 1024 pixels in height and width in order for it to look nice both when the desktop is zoomed in and zoomed out. You will have to relaunch Dextrous in order for it to identify images that have been placed in the folder.

Can I create my own deck templates?

Yes! The deck templates that appear on the New screen are found in %installfolder%\DeckTemplates (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Dextrous\DeckTemplates). All Dextrous decks are XML files, and templates are identical to regular decks except for two differences: template files end in .xml rather than .dex and have a "Title" attribute on the Deck XML element. To create a deck template, you can do something like the following:

  • Start from a blank deck (or any other template) in Dextrous.
  • Set up the fields that you want.
  • Create any cards and enter any content that you want to be part of the template.
  • Save your deck.
  • With a text or XML editor, open the deck.
  • Find the Deck tag and add a Title attribute. For example <Deck Title="My Template" Version="1.0">. The value in the Title attribute is what will appear on the New screen.
  • Save the deck with, a .xml extension, in the %installfolder%\DeckTemplates folder.
  • Relaunch Dextrous.

How do I use my registration key?

When you purchase Dextrous, you should receive an email with a code that looks something like this:
Launch the trial version of Dextrous, then go to the File screen, then Registration. Paste the complete code into the text box and click VALIDATE.
